Shaker Heights Development Corporation (SHDC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Women-Owned Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program.
SHDC, with support from Citizens Bank, developed the Women-Owned Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program to provide women-owned small businesses located in the Chagrin+Lee commercial corridor with one-time funding to help weather the rest of the pandemic.
It is SHDC’s priority to provide struggling small businesses, especially those owned by women of color, with equitable access to financial opportunities so they can continue to grow and create jobs in our community. The grants were awarded to eight brick-and- mortar businesses to be used for PPE expenses, workplace improvements to ensure customer and employee safety, significant changes to business operations to safely serve customers, marketing, digital improvements made as a result of business pivots related to the COVID-19 pandemic, utilities, inventory and rent.

Shaker Heights Development Corporation Announces Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program
Shaker Heights Development Corporation Announces Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program Shaker Heights Development Corporation (SHDC) has launched the Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program to support minority-owned businesses in Shaker Heights that have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The program is funded by Citizens, the City of Shaker Heights, and the Ohio Community Development Corporation Association.
â
“Our surveys show that minority-owned small businesses in Shaker Heights have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic,” said Scott Garson, Board President of SHDC. “There is an urgent need for funds to help these businesses deal with the COVID-19 crisis and we’re thrilled to launch a program to help meet that need,” added Nick Fedor, Executive Director of SHDC.
The Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program will provide grants of between $500 and $1,500 for eligible businesses to use for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other COVID19 related expenses.
“The City of Shaker Heights is proud to continue its ongoing partnership with SHDC by helping Shaker’s small businesses pay for PPE and other safety improvements as they continue to navigate the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor David Weiss. “We recognize the particular importance of assisting our community's minority-owned businesses, and we want to ensure they have access to the capital they need to be successful through the pandemic.”
SHDC and the Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program funders understand how small and locally owned businesses are pillars of communities like Shaker Heights.
“The strength of our business is directly tied to the strength of our communities. Small businesses have an immeasurable impact on our communities. Amid these difficult times, we’re committed to helping them navigate, recover and position themselves for success. Citizens’ support of SHDC’s Small Business Recovery Assistance Grant Program is one way we intend to help,” said Ndeda Letson, Vice President & Midwest Market Manager for Citizens.

“The Ohio CDC Association is pleased to support SHDC’s grant program for minority-owned businesses. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will unfortunately have lasting impacts on the small business community, but SHDC’s grant program will help to mitigate some of the negative impact,” said Nate Coffman, Executive Director of the Ohio CDC Association.

Shaker Heights Development Corporation (SHDC) remains steadfastly committed to supporting small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many small businesses have had to essentially reinvent their business models, including how they interact with their customers, to mention only a few of the challenges. As a sign of support, SHDC has purchased gift cards from over 50 locally owned and operated businesses.
The gift card purchases provide cash immediately to the businesses. SHDC will be auctioning off the gift cards, utilizing an online platform, to the community with the hope that the winning bidders will spend additional money at local establishments.
“The board and staff felt this was a straightforward way for the organization to support small businesses by directly contributing to their bottom line,” said Scott Garson, President of the Board of Directors of SHDC.
“Shaker small businesses are dealing with a multitude of issues right now. We are fortunate that the organization is in a position to directly support businesses and we hope the community will continue to do so as well,” said Nick Fedor, Executive Director of SHDC.
